5 Years of Juno Prime Mission at Jupiter: Main Discoveries and Extended Mission

Vincent Hue

Southwest Research Institute

Since July 2016, the Juno spacecraft is orbiting Jupiter on an elliptical and polar orbit. Juno offers a fantastic opportunity to study Jupiter?s atmosphere, interior and magnetosphere from a unique vantage point and thanks to its payload composed of 9 science instruments. In this seminar, some of the main surprises discovered during Juno?s prime mission will be presented, with an emphasis on the magnetospheric results. Jupiter?s intense magnetic field causes Jupiter to display spectacular auroral emissions, which can be seen as a window screen on the processes occurring throughout its magnetosphere. It is designed to perform in-situ measurements of the fields and particles in the Jovian magnetosphere at the same time it is remotely monitoring the associated auroral emissions. Some of the main results regarding the sub-auroral regions of Jupiter will be discussed.
